Privacy Policy

In short: Threaddit doesn't collect your data. There are no accounts, analytics, ads, or third-party trackers. Your stash is stored on your devices and synced through your own iCloud account, which the developer cannot see. The app shares only a few things: a thread's color code and name, sent to needlepoint retailer websites to look up details; and, only if you turn on the Community Catalog, the barcodes you teach it.
What Threaddit stores
Threaddit stores the information you enter about your needlepoint supplies and projects, including:
- Threads: manufacturer, product line, color code and name, fiber, and color
- Skeins: dye lot, amount remaining, and notes
- Canvases: title, designer, shop, size, mesh count, dates, status, color areas, and any photo you add
- Barcodes you've taught the app, so it recognizes them the next time you scan
This information stays on your device. The developer doesn't have a server that receives it.
iCloud sync
If you're signed in to iCloud, Threaddit syncs your stash between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac using Apple's CloudKit. It's stored in the private database of your own iCloud account, which only you can access; the developer cannot read it. Apple's handling of iCloud data is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
If you're not signed in to iCloud, your data stays on the device where you entered it.
Camera and photos
Threaddit asks for camera access so you can scan thread barcodes, read lot numbers from labels, sample colors, and photograph canvases. Barcode and text recognition happen on your device. Camera frames aren't recorded or sent anywhere. Only a photo you choose to save to a canvas is kept, and it's stored with the rest of your stash.
When you add a canvas photo from your library, the system photo picker gives Threaddit only the photo you select. It doesn't have access to the rest of your library.
Looking up threads online
When you add a new thread, Threaddit can fill in its manufacturer, product line, and fiber by searching the public websites of needlepoint retailers (currently KC Needlepoint and Penny Linn). This happens automatically when a scan finds a color code or name, or when you tap Search Online.
The search sends only the thread's color code and color name. None of your other stash data, photos, or identifiers are sent. As with visiting any website, the retailer's servers can see your IP address and the search, and their own privacy policies apply to it.
Community Catalog (optional)
The Community Catalog lets Threaddit users teach each other barcodes, so a skein one person has scanned is recognized for everyone else. It's off by default. Turn it on or off anytime in Settings › Community Catalog. While it's off, Threaddit doesn't send anything to or read anything from the catalog.
When it's on, the app does three things:
- Contributes what you teach. When you save a thread for a barcode Threaddit didn't know, it shares the barcode and its type, the manufacturer, product line, color code, color name, and the swatch color's hex value. If you later correct that thread, the corrected details are shared too.
- Shows suggestions. When you scan an unknown barcode, Threaddit checks the catalog. It only offers a suggestion that at least three separate submissions agree on and that fewer than three people have reported as wrong.
- Reports mistakes. Tapping Not This on a suggestion, or correcting a thread you taught, sends a report that the old details are wrong for that barcode. A report contains only the barcode and those details.
What's never shared: photos, dye lots, how much you own, notes, canvases, or anything else in your stash. Submissions are checked for offensive language on your device before they're sent and before a suggestion is shown.
Where it's stored: contributions go to the public database of Threaddit's iCloud container, run by Apple's CloudKit. Other Threaddit users can read them, since that's what the catalog is for. Threaddit doesn't add your name, email, device, or Apple ID to what it sends. CloudKit does attach an anonymous, app-specific ID to each saved entry. That ID doesn't reveal who you are, and Threaddit doesn't use it. To remember which barcodes you've already contributed, so each one is only counted once, Threaddit keeps a list on your device. That list is never uploaded.
Removing contributions: contributions aren't linked to you by name, so they can't be looked up and deleted one person at a time. Turning the setting off stops all future sharing. To remove something wrong you already taught, correct the thread in the app while the setting is on. That reports the old details, and once enough reports agree, the catalog stops suggesting them.
Import and export
You can export your stash as a CSV file and import one back in. Those files go only where you put them, such as your Files app, a folder on your Mac, or wherever you share them.
What Threaddit doesn't do
- No account or sign-up
- No analytics, crash-reporting, or advertising SDKs
- No tracking across apps or websites
- No selling your data, and no sharing it beyond what's described on this page
Deleting your data
Delete any thread, skein, or canvas in the app. To remove everything, delete the app. To remove synced data too, go to Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Account Storage on iPhone or iPad (System Settings › [your name] › iCloud on Mac) and delete Threaddit's data. Community Catalog contributions are handled differently; see Community Catalog.
Children
Threaddit doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
This website
This site is hosted on GitHub Pages and loads fonts from Google Fonts. Both services may log standard technical information, such as your IP address, when you visit. This site doesn't use cookies or analytics.
Changes
If Threaddit starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
